Portland is one of the best thrifting cities in North America — and locals know it. The city has nearly 50 vintage shops alone, not counting charity stores, consignment boutiques, and collective markets. The eco-conscious culture here means secondhand shopping is genuinely mainstream rather than niche, which drives both quality and volume: stores are well-stocked, staff are knowledgeable, and the curation is often exceptional.

The best concentration is on SE Hawthorne Boulevard, where House of Vintage, Red Light, and Magpie form a walkable vintage corridor that can absorb an entire afternoon. SE Division and the Richmond neighbourhood offer a second cluster. For extreme bargain hunters, the Goodwill Outlet (the "bins") is a Portland institution — clothes by the pound, bring gloves, arrive with time.

Before you go

SE Hawthorne Blvd between 33rd and 36th has House of Vintage, Red Light, and Magpie all within a few blocks — easily the best thrift walk in the city.
Portland has no sales tax, which makes every secondhand purchase slightly better value than it looks.
The Goodwill bins are extreme-budget thrifting. Go mid-week when the bins are freshest and the crowds thinner.
Artifact hosts its Funday Flea in summer — everything $1 with proceeds to nonprofits. Follow their Instagram to catch the date.

House of Vintage

✦ Tenderish Pick
VintageCollective · 60 vendors3315 SE HawthorneMulti-room warehouseOutdoor racks

The unmissable anchor of Portland's vintage scene — a massive warehouse on Hawthorne Blvd hosting 60 independent resellers across multiple rooms, with extensive outdoor thrifting racks as well. The collective format means the inventory is exceptionally broad: clothing across all decades, accessories, jewellery, vinyl, furniture, and objects. Because each vendor curates their own section, the overall quality is higher than a standard charity store. Plan at least 90 minutes. One of the genuinely great vintage collectives in the western US.

Red Light Clothing Exchange

✦ Tenderish Pick
VintageConsignmentLargest independent in PortlandSE HawthorneFunky + grungy

The largest independent used clothing reseller in Portland, and a genuine institution since the 1990s. Red Light specialises in funky, grungy, and unusual pieces — not the place for wardrobe basics, but the best place in the city for pieces with edge and character. The Hawthorne location is huge, with a strong selection across clothing, shoes, and accessories. Consign your own items for a percentage of the sale. A few blocks from House of Vintage, making them a natural same-trip pairing.

Magpie

✦ Tenderish Pick
VintageEst. 1995SE HawthorneHard-to-find piecesTrue vintage

A Portland vintage institution since 1995 — small, curated, and focused on hard-to-find true vintage pieces that are genuinely rare. Once you step inside Magpie's well-organised Southeast storefront, the inventory transports you: tweed suits, full gowns, suede fringe jackets, bow ties, pillboxes, top hats — every item with a handwritten tag giving its time period and a brief description. Not for bargain hunters; for people who want to find something they genuinely can't find elsewhere.

VintageSW Alder · DowntownPre-1980sHigh-endThriftCon featured

Featured vendor at ThriftCon Portland and widely considered one of the best curated true vintage collections in the entire Pacific Northwest. Kissing Booth specialises in pre-1980s, high-end apparel — vintage tees, sweatshirts, denim, and premium pieces with genuine provenance. The Downtown location on SW Alder makes it an easy stop if you're in the city centre. Prices are higher-end, but justified by the specificity and condition of what's on the racks.

Village Merchants

ConsignmentBuy · Sell · TradeRichmondOrganised by colour + style

A highly recommended buy-sell-trade consignment store in the Richmond neighbourhood east of downtown. What sets Village Merchants apart is its organisation by colour and style rather than category, making it surprisingly easy to discover complementary pieces. Larger furniture pieces are in the back; smaller decor and accessories up front. Clothing, accessories, and home goods across multiple decades at reasonable prices. One of Portland's better bets for a curated consignment experience without the vintage-shop price premium.

Goodwill Bins (Outlet Store)

CharityBy the poundSE PortlandExtreme bargainsBring gloves

The legendary Portland 'bins' — Goodwill's outlet store, where clothing sells by weight rather than by item. Roughly $1–2 per pound, making it the cheapest way to thrift in the city by a considerable margin. Not for the faint-hearted: it's crowded, the bins are constantly being turned over, and you're sorting through unsorted donations alongside other dedicated thrifters. Bring hand sanitiser, wear comfortable clothes, and arrive with time to spare. An authentic Portland thrift rite of passage.
